Day 1

Today we begin the novena to St. Therese, a spiritual guide for billions of people. She has fulfilled her desire to spend her heaven doing good on earth by guiding people to a deeper and more satisfying relationship with God through her little way of confidence and love.

St. Therese says: “My soul desires only this science of love… I understand very clearly that only love can make us pleasing to God and this love is the only good I ardently desire. Jesus is pleased to show me the road that leads to this divine furnace, and this is the road of the surrender of the little child who sleeps without fear in its father’s arms.” (An extract from ‘my vocation is love’)

Reading: 1 Cor. 13: 1-3

                                                                                               Prayer

Lord, you have said unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven, help us as we imitate the little way of humility and simplicity of heart of St. Therese to follow you passionately and share in your passion for each human person, who lives and reigns forever, Amen.

                                                                                     Hymn to St. Therese

Day 2

Reading from Mirabai

Mira hath thou accepted

As more than thy maid

Protect me then,

Guard Thou Mira’s honour Lord!

At Thy Lotus Feet

Do I shelter seek!

 My refuge art thou, Beloved.

And in this broad, boundless sea

Of life art Thou my Boat,

How can I cross

Without Thee, Beloved?

                                                                                  Prayer as above

                                                                           Hymn to St. Therese

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 3

“Sometimes when my mind is in dryness that it is impossible for me to draw one thought to unite myself to God, I recite very slowly an Our Father and then the angelic salutation. These prayers carry me away, they nourish my soul so much more than if I had recited them quickly one hundred times.” (My vocation is love)

Reading: Mt. 6: 7-15

                                                                                   Prayer as above

                                                                            Hymn to St. Therese

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 4

Pluck this little flower and take it, delay not, I fear lest it droop and drop into the dust. It may not find a place in Thy garland, but honour it with a touch of pain from thy hand and pluck it. I fear lest the day end before I am aware and the time of offering go by. Though its colour be not deep and its smell be faint, use this flower in Thy service and pluck it while there is time (Gitanjali).

                                                                                    Prayer as above

                                                                             Hymn to St. Therese

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 5

In the words of St. Therese “I haven’t any misgivings whatsoever about the final struggles or suffering of this sickness, no matter how great they may be. God has always come to my aid; He has helped me and led me by the hand from my childhood. I count upon him. I am sure, he will continue to help me until the end. I may really become exhausted and worn out but I shall never have too much to suffer.” (St. Therese of Liseux)

                                                                                     Prayer as above

                                                                             Hymn to St. Therese

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 6

Reading: Rev. 14: 1-5

When we love, we belong no longer to ourselves but to the one we love, and we live more in him than in ourselves. God is the centre of the soul. So, when the soul with all its strength will know God perfectly, love and enjoy him fully, then it will have reached the deepest center that can be reached in him. (Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity)

                                                                                       Prayer as above

                                                                                    Hymn to St. Therese

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 7

Reading: Mt. 11: 25-27

St. Therese helps those in their younger years to live and work with confidence and trust in God’s love for them. She assists us in joyous and sometimes painful surrender of our entire being in to the hands of our merciful Father.

                                                                                       Prayer as above

                                                                                  Hymn to St. Therese

Day 8

“Yes it is painful to be looked at and laughed at when one is suffering. But I think how our Lord on the cross was looked at in the same way in the midst of his sufferings. It was even worse, for they were really mocking him. Is it not? It is said in the gospels that they looked at him shaking their heads. This thought aids me in offering him this sacrifice in the right spirit.”- St. Therese

                                                                                          Prayer as above

                                                                                      Hymn to St. Therese

Day 9

Reading: Psalm 126

“Yes, my Beloved I have no other means of showing you my love than by profiting from all the smallest things and doing them out of love. I want to suffer for love and even rejoice for love so that in this way I will throw flowers before your throne. Then while I am throwing my flowers I shall sing even when I have to gather my flowers in the midst of thorns my song will be all the more melodious when the thorns are longest.”-St. Therese
