SR. CAMILLA (1926-2012)
Catherine was born at Ettumannur in Kottayam. She was the seventh child of Annamma and Ittiavira Chacko. Catherine had five sisters and two brothers. On completing her higher education as Malayalam Pandit, Catherine joined the CSSTs. She was given the name Sr. Mary Camilla of the Holy Spirit at her 1st commitment on 30.05.1950.
Sr. Camilla began her teaching mission at Mt. Carmel School, Kottayam. Sister also taught at Carmel School, Trivandrum and at St. Joseph’s Thrissur. Sister was a dedicated teacher. She was specially gifted in music and played piano, harmonium and tabla. Sister made the Liturgy heavenly with her music. Her talents were shared with the neighbouring parishes as well. Sister used to prepare children for their 1st Holy Communion regularly and made beautiful bouquets and wreaths for them. She had great love for the church. On Saturdays children cleaned the church under sister’s leadership.
Sr. Camilla was very jovial, energetic and a good entertainer at community recreations. Sister used make the Superior’s Feast Day very grand. She taught Catechism to the working personnel. Sister was also a good gardener. Often she would be found tending to the plants. She also got others to help her with gardening and showed the worth of manual labour.
While bed-ridden, Sr. Camilla used to sing her favorite hymns cheerfully for her visitors and the sisters of the community. Many used to request her for prayers which she gladly obliged. Till the very end her gentle smile never left her. Sister was very devoted to St. Joseph and it was on a Wednesday she was received by the Almighty, as the community stayed around her, singing her favorite hymn.
