SR. MADELEINE SOPHIE (1911-2004)
Lena Ghaye was born on 15th October 1911. She was baptized on 24th of the same month at Good Shepherd Church, Kottayam. Lena was one of the early children brought up by our sisters. She did her High School at Mt. Carmel, Thangassery and Intermediate at St. Teresa’s Ernakulam. Lena joined our Institute on 25th May 1933. Her Postulancy, Novitiate and 1st Profession were at St. Teresa’s Ernakulam. At her 1st Profession Lena was given the name Sr. Madeline Sophie of the Sacred Heart.
Sr. Sophie was a talented musician. She did her Senior Grade in music A.T.C.L. of Trinity College of Music London at St. Teresa’s Ernakulam. Sister was awarded a scholarship and was sent for further studies in music to California and then to Chicago; and Liturgical Music at Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. She also did voice training in the States. Sister was well versed in playing the Organ, Violin and Guitar. She has written a book named ‘A Tribute in Song’. Sr. Sophie was a member in the Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. Sister was very active in Parish work, Girl Guide Movement, promotion of music and singing, and social work.
Sr. Sophie has taught music and singing to students from High School to College. Sister has also trained many students in instrumental music especially the piano who have passed out with laurals. For all our special days, celebrations and religious professions Sr. Sophie was the Choir Mistress. Her beautiful Opera voice was a great attraction to all. We can be sure that sister is now among the choirs of angels singing the praises of the Lord in an unending chorus.
Sr. Sophie has travelled to Europe and U. K. She also was a travelling companion to Mother Rita on her visitation to our convents in U.A.E., Canada and U.S.A.
