HISTORY OF THE NORTHERN PROVINCE OF THE CSST INSTITUTE This is how our Northern Province came into existence. The General Chapter/Assembly of 1982 decided to divide the convents of the CSST Congregation into four regions for the following reasons: • To relate our apostolate more effectively to the needs of the various parts of the country; • To facilitate administration; • To take more personal care of the sisters. Hence with the permission from Rome, the four Regions were formed: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and North. The Northern Region was spread across six states of India and had 12 convents: Giridihi, Chakai and Madhupur in Bihar: Gwalior, Raigarh and Bishrampur in M.P.; Bandra and Malad in Mumbai, Maharashtra; Balliguda in Orissa; Muzaffarnagar in U.P.; 2 convents in Faridabad, Haryana. The Superior General, Mother Digna, with her council, appointed the four Regional Superiors. The first Regional Superior of the Northern Region was Sr. Marina for the three year term 1982-85, after which Sr. Yvonne Marie was appointed as the second Regional Superior, from 1985-88. The residence of the first two Regional Superiors, from 1982 - 88, was St. Joseph’s Convent, NIT 5, Faridabad. In 1988, Sr. Corsina was appointed as the Regional Superior and her residence was Carmel Convent, Raigarh. However, just a year later in 1989, Rome approved of the regions being constituted as Provinces, hence the Regional Superiors and their Councillors were raised “ipso facto’ to the corresponding offices in their respective Provinces. Thus, Sr. Corsina became the first Provincial of the Northern Province on August 15th 1989 with her residence at Carmel Convent, Raigarh.
